My partner and I have been going to the Big Island every year since 1989 and we've stayed at all of the major Waikoloa resorts, and in our opinion the Mauna Kea is, hands down, the best overall experience on that part of the island. What amazes us away every time we've been there is the incredible, almost sublime attention to detail. The grounds are spotless, everything is where it should be, and service is first-rate -- never intrusive, yet always there when you need it. In fact, at the Mauna Kea we always feel as if we have the hotel all to ourselves, a feeling we've definitely never had at the Hilton, Mauna Lani, Orchid or any of the other Waikoloa resorts. We can't recommend this hotel highly enough!
We stayed in seven hotels during our two week stay on three islands. This was one of my two favorites. But when we first arrived, I was somewhat dismayed. The building is sort of mid century in appearance-we weren't able to get a complimentary upgrade, our room faced the wrong side and was slightly musty- but quite large and with a huge lanai. But by the next morning, I was completely won over. The room had a great bath- every ammenity- there was fresh papaya in our fridge and I loved the shutter doors that closed off the lanai- lots of tropical atmosphere. The beach is perfect! We had just come from one night at the Hilton monstrosity-I can't imagine who would swim in that manmade lagoon- so this gorgeous, soft sand beach was paradise. It's an incredibly quiet, relaxing, very zen kind of place. You don't see a lot of guests- maybe they are playing golf. We ate outdoors each night and for breakfast overlooking the Pacific- food excellent- and slightly less expensive than we expected after being at the Ritz in Maui a couple of years ago. They have a point overlooking the ocean, with a big light..manta rays come in the evening- so much fun...and a fabulous sunset. We sat watching with a couple from Hilo who told us all about the "green flash"....and then saw it for the first time! It's a well run hotel- many guests sounded like they had been coming for years- lots of older people- but young ones and honeymooners, too. I've never been so relaxed- there's something about it hard to describe..not glitzy, almost spare but very gracious and lots of subtle atmosphere. Check availability and book Mauna Kea Beach Hotel |
