Spent 2 rainy nights in the tentalows & 1 night in the lodge in Dec/03. Tentalows are rustic. Miniscule bugs invaded our suitcases & mosquitos did attack. Shower is tepid. At the time we went, beach was not swimmable. We weren't on the inclusive-meal plan so did not try the meals. It's a 6 mile drive on a dirt road from the tentalows to the lodge (roughly 20 min) to get to a store or restaurant. The lodge is very resort-like. Large rooms, clawfoot tubs, well equipped fitness center, infinity pool, pool table, bar, internet access - feels like you're staying at your very rich uncle's vacation lodge. All in all, both tentalows & lodge were relaxing & exceptionally quiet, but if I went back, I'd stay at the lodge for the creature comforts.
Pluses: The empty beach, a bit rough but definitely swimmable; buffet breakfasts and dinners-plenty of hearty food-you bring your own wine etc.--all outside with a beautiful ocean view. Showering in your cabin with the sky as the roof. Extremely quiet, low key-you can't drive to your cabin-so all cars are by the front gate-no cars sounds-only the surf. The Sheraton Lodge has wonderful rooms, an infinity swimming pool and a good restaurant and entertainment on weekends. A super place but not on the ocean and it can get coolMinuses: Several people dispayed lots of mosquito bites-the cabins have screens-but a few bugs sneek in-we sprayed ourselves with insect repellent-I heard a few buzzing around at night. Be sure to bring a travel alarm-we were worried about missing our flight because there is no electricity or phones and we had to rely on the security guard for wake up.This is an EMPTY island and VERY dry-the complete opposite of Kauai.
The tentaloos were so romantic. The first night I was a little leery. That quickly changed by the second day when I was showering in the open top shower. I loved the shower so much I showered twice a day, once in the morning under the blue sky/palm trees and again in the evening under the stars. I took a safe candle to set the mood and a flashlight for walking the grounds at night. This place is a must visit if you want to get away from it all.
