Hawaii beaches: Waikiki beach

Perhaps the world's most famous beach, Waikiki has been shown in many Hollywood movies. Waikiki beach is basically a two mile stretch of coast fronted by hotels and tourism related facilities and the very beautiful Kapiolani Park.

The warm waters are perfect for snorkeling, surfing or just floating on an inflatable mat. Offshore you'll find some of the best summer surf breaks on the island - including spots called Diamond Head, Queens, Kaisers, Ala Moana Bowls, Tennis Courts, Big Rights and Kewalos. Waikiki Beach is usually crowded, it is one of Hawaii's busiest visitor district.

Hanauma Bay

Once the playground of Hawaiian royalty, Hanauma Bay Nature Park is one of the most popular Hawaii beaches for recreational swimming, snorkeling and diving. The sea life here is protected by law and the fish are so tame that they will eat from your hand. The steep hills that surround the bay provide breathtaking views of the sandy beach and the crystal-clear water below. You will have excellent views from the hillside parking area prior to descending the trail that leads to the beach.

Kailua Beach

Kailua has a very nice, fine sandy beach. It's a perfect place to enjoy swimming and beach recreational activities. Steady breezes and sandy shorelines make it Oahu's windsurfing capital. There are several shops in Kailua town, which offer rental gear and that can arrange for lessons.

Hawaii beaches: Sunset beach

Sunset Beach

This spot is known for its spectacular and dangerous winter surf. As its name indicates, this beach is also a great place to pick a spot on the sand and watch the sunset. The beach is popular among kitesurfers.

Sandy Beach

As the name implies, 1,200 foot-long Sandy Beach has an abundance of sand. There is also a reef of volcanic rocks on the eastern portion of the beach. Sandy Beach is considered the best spot for bodysurfing on Oahu. But it's not recommended for novices, because the currents in this area can be very strong. Amenities include restrooms, changing facilities, public phones, outdoor showers, vending trucks with a nearby picnic area, and lifeguards.
