Big Island Hawaii Beaches

Anaeho'omalu Bay

A lovely white sand beach edged with towering palms. There are many spots of archaeological significance nearby, and you can not only lie in the sun, but explore ancient petroglyphs. Besides, Anaeho'omalu Bay is one of the best Big Island windsurfing spots.

Hapuna Beach State Park

Hawaii beaches: Hapuna beach

The nicest of Hawaii beaches with beautiful white sand, a clean sandy bottom, and great surf. This is the best beach on the island for the beginning body boarder. Snack bar and covered pavilions are available.

Kona Coast State Park

Travel to Kona Coast can be a bit long and rough, but the trip is worth it. The beach is a perfect place for swimming, snorkeling, shore diving and lazy body boarding. Bring your binoculars for seasonal whale watching. Turtles and dolphins can be seen here too.

Samuel Spencer Beach Park

Hawaii beaches

Great family beach with calm water. Considered one of the safest swimming spots for kids and unexperienced swimmers among Hawaii beaches. Good spot to sun, fish, catch up on some reading or just kick back and coast. It is located on the Kohala Coast. Facilities: tennis courts and showers.

Kahalu'u Beach Park

One of the best snorkel spots on the island. A large coral reef defends the bay from the waves. You have the option between swimming with turtles in calm waters or going head out beyond the reef for surfing and boogie sufring. The water's a little murky near shore but clearer out by the breakwater.

Old Airport Beach Park

What used to be the Kona Airport is now a nice beach. It's a good place for picnicking and relaxing. Plenty of picnic tables in the shade make it an enjoyable lunch rendezvous. Numerous tide pools contain a multitude of tiny ocean creatures. This beach is also a popular spot for body surfing. Adjacent to the beach, the old runway if great for walking, jogging or roller blading.

Magic Sands Beach Park

The beach is also called White sands and Disappearing Sands because during the high surf months (usually November through April) its sand "magically" disaapears. But it returns in Spring to produce a white sandy beach. It's a good body surfing and boogieboarding, but it's not recommended for the beginners. A good shore diving entry is 100 yards south at the white coral beach.

Mauna Kea Beach (Kauna'oa Beach)

This beach at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is considered one of the most beautiful Hawaii beaches. It is also called Kauna'oa Beach. It has white sand, clear water and moderate surf. Manta rays viewable at night. The snorkeling is good at the left end of the beach and this is a great place for children to try body boarding. The beach is well maintained with nice facilities. The Mauna Kea Hotel limits passes and it's first come first served, so get there early.

King Kamehameha Hotel Beach

The "King Kam" beach is a great place for young children, because of its calm surf and white sand. It's also a good place for snorkeling, especially outside the inner bay. Not far from the beach there is the Hawaiian temple (Ahu'ena Heiau), where King Kamehameha I ruled and died. There is paid parking at the hotel and free parking around town.
