Hana, the last Hawaiian place on Maui

Hawaii, Maui: Hana

Unspoiled, serene and mystical, Hana impresses travelers with its natural scenic beauty and the spirit of aloha. This small town on Maui's northeast side hasn't changed over the last 20 years.

It has managed to preserve the small town atmosphere, Hawaiian culture and the natural beauty. In Hana people still speak the Hawaiian language, raise taro, fruits and flowers in small plots.

The road, that winds along the northeast coast of Maui and leads to Hana, is an attraction in itself. Travelers to Hana enjoy the most beautiful scenery in the world - lavish vegetation, waterfalls, empty beaches.

A trip to Hana should be at least an overnight affair. You'll see so many attractive spots to stop along the way that getting to Hana may take the whole day. If you have only one day for visiting Hana, plan to leave very early in the morning and return in the evening.

Be sure to visit Hana's beautiful beaches: Hana Bay which is famous for excellent swimming and snorkeling, the secluded Red Sand Beach, and Hamoa Beach, used by guests of Hotel Hana-Maui, but open for everyone.

The town of Hana itself is very small and can be viewed in a short time. Attractions of Hana include Hana Cultural Center, which houses a small collection of Hawaiian artifacts and Wananalua Church, built in 1838 in New England style. The interior of the church features native koa wood.

Another remarkable attraction of Hana is Hotel Hana-Maui. Small, secluded, and quietly luxurious, it was built in 1946, and now it is the Hawaii's only member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (a group of properties, noted for unique character and appeal). The dining room of Hotel Hana-Maui is a must on Friday nights, when a local troupe performs hula.
