Hawaii Transportation

Getting around Oahu

On Oahu you have many transportation options. First important thing for you is to decide if you're planning to limit your stay to Waikiki and Honolulu area, or you're planning to circumnavigate the island.

The best way to explore the island is, certainly, to rent a car. Traffic jams and parking problems sometimes happen, but it is your the choice that will leave you with the most flexible sightseeing options.

If you're going to stay at Waikiki, arrange to have the hotel's van pick you up at the airport, or take a taxi. Although the one way taxi fare is comparable to a one day economy car rental, this is more comfortable: it saves time, and you do not have to think about navigation and parking.
Once you get to your Waikiki hotel, you'll find you can walk, bus, or use Waikiki Trolley, which drops off and picks up passengers at each point of interest.

Getting around Maui

The visitors attractions are spread all over the island of Maui, so the best choice is to rent a car. Bus service is not so reliable on Maui; taxi's are good only for short trips and can be too expensive to use for sightseeing. Mopeds or motocycles are fun only if travel only short distances. They are not recommended if the weather is windy and rainy.
